The repair of the Melo power plant’s dam on the Kokemäenjoki river in Nokia will continue until the end of the year. The work includes the construction of a bored pile wall which will ensure the dam’s watertightness. The dam bridge will remain closed to traffic for the duration of the repairs.
The watertightness of the Melo hydropower plant’s earth dam will be ensured during the year with the construction of a bored pile wall, the lower part of which will be embedded in rock. The sections with changes detected in the retaining earth dam have already been reinforced, first by concrete and then bentonite grout.
“The grouting will be finished by the end of February and preparations for the instalment of the bored pile wall will begin on 1 March 2022. The pile driving will get underway in April and the construction work is expected to continue until the end of 2022”, says PVO-Vesivoima’s asset management specialist Matti Åman.
KFS Finland Oy has been selected as the contractor to carry out the construction of the bored pile wall, while the steel piles will be delivered by SSAB. The project’s construction management and supervision consultant is Welado Oy.
The dam bridge will remain closed to traffic until the end of the year
The dam bridge will remain entirely closed to traffic for the duration of the repairs. Movement on the construction site is forbidden for safety reasons. The repair work will require some traffic arrangements due to site traffic and occasional transports. The traffic related to the repair work is directed to the dam from the south, through Kohmala.
The dam’s repair will have no environmental impacts. Nor will the work have an impact on the quality of water or the surface of the Pyhäjärvi lake. The Melo hydropower plant will operate normally throughout the repair work.
